At Spice-A-Bowl, we feel that food shouldn't just be delicious—it should be nourishing to the body and soul. That's why each spice card is rooted in both taste and function.
Influenced by Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old system of natural healing from India, our spice mixes are designed to bring balance, vitality and joy to your meals.
Let's take a flavorful journey through a few of our favorite ingredients—then you'll see just why these spices have been valued across cultures for centuries.
🌿 Turmeric: The Golden Healer
Used for thousands of years in South Asia, turmeric is often referred to as the "golden spice" for good reason. In Ayurveda, turmeric is a tridoshic herb, meaning that it balances all three doshas - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The important compound in turmeric is called curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant combination, and is recognized for its support of joint health, immunity, and gut health.
However, modern science recognizes just what our ancient healers knew long ago: Turmeric promotes memory, lowers inflammation, and may help stave off chronic disease; which is why at Spice-A-Bowl, we always recommend to be sure to combine turmeric with black pepper, which contains a natural compound called piperine, an important component that enhances the absorption of curcumin. There is a medicinal value to turmeric, and it is
Not only is turmeric medicinal, it’s also incredibly versatile in the kitchen. From golden lattes to savory curries and soups, turmeric adds warm, earthy depth to any dish. It’s the perfect spice for soothing your body and soul.
🔥 Szechuan Peppercorn: A Tingly Twist with Powerful Perks
Szechuan peppercorn is not merely a spicy seasoning in Chinese cooking, but rather, it is a time-honored medicinal herb. This spice has a tingling sensation on the tongue (due to hydroxy-alpha sanshool) and has been applied in Traditional Chinese Medicine for years to promote circulation, relieve pain, and boost general energy levels.
Here at Spice-A-Bowl, we enjoy Szechuan peppercorn to promote digestion, ease headaches, and enhance the mood through endorphin stimulation. Szechuan peppercorn is also packed with essential oils that help with blood flow and heart health.
In the kitchen, the unique intense flavors of Szechuan peppercorn pair very well with garlic, ginger, and chili. It works well in stir-fries, noodles, or braised meats-just be sure to roast it gently before grinding to release all of the spice's aromatic qualities!
🌰 Cumin: Earthy, Aromatic, and Gut-Friendly
If turmeric is known as the healer, and Szechuan peppercorn is recognized as the energizer, cumin is certainly the great balancer among these spices. Cumin is nearly universally found in Indian, Middle Eastern, and most Latin American cuisine, and it is well-known for its ability to support digestion, regulate metabolism, and increase iron levels in the blood.
Ayurvedic practitioners use cumin to help balance Agni, or the digestive fire in the body. Cumin can help minimize bloating and ease discomfort while aiding in nutrient absorption. Cumin also has its own natural antioxidant properties, which makes it a tremendous supporter of long-term health.
In the kitchen, ground cumin will add a profound and earthy taste to everything, including curries, lentils, rice, and vegetables. You can toast cumin seeds to intensify warm, nutty aromas before grinding, which boosts any cooking project to its very own higher level.
